High Noon

The very best of Northcote will be showcased at the inaugural HIGH NOON Street Festival on Sunday 18 September 2011 from 10am to 6pm.

The length of High Street between the Town Hall and Separation Street will become a hive of activity as the strip closes to make way for a rich program that includes all the things you know and love about Northcote, as well as many you are yet to discover! The HIGH NOON Street Festival is a daytime event, so grab a friend and come for High Breakfast and stick around to enjoy a wide range of Street Activities and Live Music from our outdoor stages.

At midday, two rival local bands – The Blue Brigade and The Red Brigade – do battle with brass. A musical and visual spectacle, this scintillating ‘Showdown’ will set the streets ablaze with reds and blues and rousing tunes. For this, just one of the highlights of HIGH NOON 2011, be sure to dress in your favourite red or blue gear as audience participation is not only encouraged but inevitable!

HIGH NOON fuses Northcote’s eclectic mix of art, music, fashion and food into eight hours of street festival goodness. This spectacular celebration of our diverse and consistently creative community is not to be missed. All this before sundown... best get there early!

Join us on Facebook for regular updates on HIGH NOON and other local news and events. HIGH NOON proudly supports Second Bite. Your voluntary donation on entry will be shared with Second Bite and also goes towards making the event possible.

High Breakfast

It all kicks off with HIGH BREAKFAST at 10am, when High Streets cafés and restaurants start serving up the very best of their breakfast menus. High Street will be transformed into an alfresco dining destination, peppered with tables and chairs complete with live music and outdoor bars for those who want to grab a drink.

Here’s a taste of what’s on offer... best get there early!

Horsing around with one bowl banana bread, from Emily’s kitchen to yours
Some Palomino’s have their own TV show, like Mr. Ed. Some Palomino’s carry Hollywood
Cowboy star Roy Rogers. But OUR Palomino makes the best-ever-one-bowl banana bread.
Here’s how it’s done.

Do this first. Pre heat oven 175c

Gather these things
125gm unsalted butter
3 super ripe bananas
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg lightly beaten

1 tbs vanilla paste
Pinch of cinnamon
Pinch of cloves
1.5 cups plain flour
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1 pinch of salt
Good handful of raw roughly
chopped walnuts

Then do this. Grease and line loaf tin. Melt butter and set aside. In a mixing bowl mash bananas
and melted butter, sugar, egg, vanilla, cloves, and cinnamon. Mix to combine. Add flour baking
powder, and salt mix until just combined. Spoon in to loaf tin, top with chopped walnuts. Bake for
50 min to 1 hour. Cool on rack. Serve warm with butter or mascarpone.

And finally, drum roll, prance, flick your mane. Like all uniquely coloured Palominos, stand out
in a show ring and eat your one-bowl-best-ever banana bread OR BETTER STILL visit Emily (at
236 High Street Northcote) for hers. Neigh.

A penny farthing for your pea and sage bruschetta
Forget your chain drives and pneumatic bicycle tires. High Wheelers everywhere are donning
aprons for pea and sage bruschetta from the Simmons brothers. Yes. Our very own Simmons
brothers.

Gather these things
2 cups fresh peas
1 medium onion, finely diced
1 clove garlic
2 tbsp chopped sage
¼ cup vegetable stock

Then do this
Sautee garlic and onion in olive oil in a medium to hot pan. Season lightly. Once garlic is clear,
add vegetable stock and peas. Add sage and simmer for one minute. Allow to cool and blend in
food processor using pulse function. Take care not to over blend. Season to taste and add dash
of olive oil, if desired. Serve on lightly toasted sourdough bread with poached eggs and smoked
salmon. Garnish with fresh watercress.

Complementary High Noon valet bike parking for all Penny Farthing’s so you can roll like a
bicycle to Penny Farthing Espresso (at 206 High Street Northcote). So good Bro, so good.
